Quo vadis?___THIRD PRIZE WINNER BP PORTRAIT AWARD 2019 - National Portrait Gallery - London.

Vincenza is 95 years old. She lives alone in Gavignano, a medieval village near Anagni, the city of the popes, where she was born in 1924. Vincenza is my grandmother and part of my family history. I wanted to represent her in a moment of her everyday life, sitting in the middle of the kitchen, illuminated from above by a chandelier that, like a spotlight, highlights the features of almost a century of life. Behind her, a wall of tiles - brilliantly polished by herself - and above, a window slightly open, connecting her to the outside world, a connection that could also be interpreted in a more spiritual sense. On her neck, sits a pearl necklace and on her legs, her inseparable hot water bottle, an allegorical symbol of vanitas, representing an ephemeral moment of passing time. The water that now warms her hands sooner or later will cool, which, like life, comes and goes. With dignity she shows us life in all parts of her face. She looks at us, but at the same time she is somewhere else, absorbed in thought. The portrait is intended as a reflection upon the mystery of life. Vincenza lives each day as if it’s her last and often tells me: "you'll see that tomorrow, I’ll be gone." Quo vadis? is the question that the portrait puts to the beholder. Where are we going? This portrait is truly important to me, it touches emotional chords tied to memories of past life. Selfishly, I wanted to capture her image, to freeze time. Every wrinkle tells her story as a woman and at the same time, ties me to my family roots. My grandmother is an example of strength, dignity, but also authority, despite its simplicity and irony. She has spent a lifetime working as a miller's wife, and as a worker in a blasting explosive factory, working hard to raise a family with many children. She taught us with simplicity and authenticity that what is important is the heart of a person and not what social class you come from.
